Eleanor from White Plains
Why has this mission been referred to as the most difficult and challenging compared to all the previous missions?
Daniel from DALLAS, TX
What is the SpaceHab single module? What's in it? What is it for?
Jeremy from Tuscaloosa
When the commander is given the call " You are Go at Throttle Up" what does he do to throttle up the main engines? Does he push a button or do the computers automatically thrust the main engines.
Jeremy from Tuscaloosa
When the main engines are fired at T-minus 6.6 seconds why does the shuttle look like it goes up and back down before the SRBs are ignited?
Jeremy from Tuscaloosa
What will the spacehab module provide for the ISS?
Jeremy from Tuscaloosa
If the weather turns from green to red between the t-minus 10-liftoff stage what makes the shuttle not lift off? Who has the call for the abort liftoff?
Justin from Tuscaloosa
What will happen if the command is given for the station to restart its power and the station doesn't start up again?
Justin from Tuscaloosa
What will happen if the truss doesn't deploy due to stickiness or other things?
Justin from Tuscaloosa
When the payload is put into the cargo bay what holds it down during launch. What happens if the payload gets damaged during liftoff.
Justin from tuscaloosa
Why does the shuttle have to go through ROLL PROGRAM during liftoff? Is it because of the positioning of the ISS and the backflip to dock with the ISS?
Jeremy from Tuscaloosa
What will happen if the shuttle gets damaged during liftoff, and it can not get fixed in space? Will the LON 317 come up, and rescue Discovery, and where will the shuttle dock at with the other shuttle taking up the docking port. Will the shuttle liftoff by computer, or will there be people on the shuttle and how will the damaged shuttle get back home?
Nick from Brisbane
I am am amazed how the shuttle sits on the launch pad and my question is what hold it in its place? Every time I look at it I wonder how it stays there and not fall off.
Nick from Brisbane
I've seen mission pictures of inside the flightdeck of a shuttle and see a lot of marks on front windows. Are they scratched or am I looking at ice?
Nitin from Hyderabad, INDI
What is SpaceHab? Why it is used in this mission?
Dario from Milan, Italy
In the days immediately preceeding the launch, if during the night any problems on the Shuttle systems are found and the launch need to be scrubbed, who makes this decision if the launch director is not on duty in that moment? Thanks! You are doing a great job there and I wish you great missions ahead!
Dario from Milan, Italy
I have read that with STS-115 a new procedure called "camping out" was adopted for the first time by the spacewalkers. What is exactly this process? Do you intend to use this procedure from now on every time you have to send someone outside for a scheduled EVA? Thanks!
Lynn from Hopedale
Why has Discovery been used for three out of the last four missions? When will Endeavour fly again?
Celeste from Weirton
Do the different orbiters have different capabilites that makes them better suited to particular missions or are they all the same?
Ryan from Houston
What is the feeling or mood around the Kennedy Space Center and Mission Control when the words "launch is scrubbed" are heard?
Matthew from Richardson
How does the emergency crew fix the heat shield if the shuttle gets damaged during flight?
Corey from Edmonton, AB
Why is it that the external tank is not reused but the solid rocket boosters are? Does the shuttle leave the atmosphere completely after 8 1/2 minutes so the tank burns up in the atmosphere?
Corey from Edmonton Canada
What is meant by "Inclination/Orbit Altitude?"
Jerry from Portsmouth UK
Do some shuttle crew members have trouble sleeping at prescribed times? If so are they given anything to help them sleep?
jerry from Portsmouth UK
Do astronauts shave in the shuttle? If so, how?
Dario from Milan, Italy
If the mission needs to be aborted during the ascent phase when the shuttle is not yet on a stable orbit, I guess that the decision is to be made in a few seconds. Who is responsible to take that decision? The shuttle commander or the flight director at the MCC? Thanks and have a wonderful mission!
Dario from Milan, Italy
Is the attitude and orientation of the ISS impacted when the shuttle docks/undocks? If so, how is the space station kept in a stable attitude during these operations?
Dario from Milan, Italy
STS-115 was hit by a micrometeoroid that caused a small hole in the payload door. Is this something that happens frequently during the missions? How do you minimize the risk of being impacted by these objects? Many thanks. I wish you a wonderful mission!
Jennifer from Green Bay, WI
On this mission, the space station is going to be rewired. With the station being so huge, is it possible to complete all the rewiring during just one mission or will it be done over a few missions?
Jennifer from Green Bay, WI
When all the rewiring of the station is completed, what kind of things will the station be able to do that it was not able to do before? What differences will there be in power?
Jennifer from Green Bay,WI
If something were to go wrong during the rewiring job, such as the worse case scenerio for this type of work, what would the astronauts, station, and ground crew do? Would the station and shuttle crew still remain onboard or evacuate and return to home?
Jennifer from Green Bay, WI
Will the SPACEHAB stay in space for bigger living/working quarters after all the cargo in it comes out or will it be sent back to earth for other upcoming missions?
Jennifer from Green Bay, WI
With this being a night launch, are you worried that during launch, you will not see something that could cause harm to the shuttle? Would you go back to just day launches or keep going on with both day and night launches?
Nitin from Hyderabad, INDI
What is Debris Verification Review? Why is it done before the launch? What exactly is checked or verified? How does it affect the launch?
Nitin from Hyderabad,INDIA
What happens if ET (External Tank) does not get separated from the orbiter?
Robert Wennberg from Gävle, Sweden
I'm curious as to the STS cargo capacity when landing. That is could it take down Hubble when its service life has ended. Has the landing cargo capacity changed during the life of the STS system. Thank you.
Michael from Portland, OR
May I ask this following question. I have always been wondering about the price of a Space Shuttle and its operation cost per launch. Thank you.
Matt from Laurel, MD
I noticed in picutres of Atlantis and Discovery, that there are "dimples" on the top and left of the nose of the shuttle (behind the RCS, in front of the cabin). I was curious what purpose they serve.
Bethany from bradenton
Will it be safe to fly the space shuttle at night? Can they look over the space shuttle to see if ther is any thing wrong with the space shuttle before putting it on the launch pad to prevent any launch delays?
Michael from Herriman, UT
My two part question is I was wondering with the delay in ISS assembly, are all of the major pieces of the station done and at NASA or are there items stilling being built? And if so, which items are still pending delivery to NASA? Thanks.
Michael from Herriman, UT
I was curious to know what could be done in the reconfig of the power system if the power lines from the solar panels in the station are to stiff and don't bend to the new hookup locations. Will the station be reoriented and/or maybe some covers removered to allow the sun to heat the lines up prior to moving the lines like what was done on the array deployment?
James from Wellington
It sounds like the robotic arm is manually operated during the wing inspection. Surely this could be a automatic procedure that could happen while the crew sleeps (or does some other work).
Jeremy from Tuscaloosa
Will the P3/P4 solar arrays be activated after the P6 array is moved out of the way? Will they start rotating to track the sun before Discovery undocks from the station or afterwords with the crew gone?
Jeremy from tuscaloosa
What tracks the shuttle when it comes in to land? Are there tracking stations located at the runway? Do the deploy air data probes give the crew the positioning to land the shuttle?
bree from memphis
How many G-forces do astronauts feel during liftoff?
François from Namur (Belgium)
What is the SPACEHAB module ? Is it like the MPLM modules which are used to bring supplies to the ISS ?
François from Namur (Belgium)
I noticed that during the launch of STS 115, the orbital maneuvring system engines were used to provide additional thrust. Is it done for each launch or was it explained by the high weight of the P3/P4 truss ?
paul from west palm beach
Why does the shuttle always go Northeast after a launch? Do shuttles ever go on a Southeastern heading?
Patricia from Orlando
How does it feel to be up in space and to look at the stars? I really feel for you because you get first hand look at space.
David from Colorado Spring
At launch to T+20, what speed is the shuttle traveling at? I assume it isn't a constant speed.
Marissa from west covina
What do you discover and take pictures of in space?
Nitin from Hyderabad, INDI
Why is the playload installed at launch pad? How is the playload installed in the orbiter cargo bay from the payload changeout room? How is the orbiter cargo bay opened for installation without exposing it to outside air and contaminants?
Tim Koch from Maiden, NC
I just read an article concerning the upcoming mission. It referred to uncertainty over how the on-board computers would handle the changing year while the shuttle is in orbit. Can't that question be effectively explored on the ground by simply changing the date in the computer and letting it go through the transition in the simulator?
Tucker from Powell,TN
Since the STS 107 Columbia tragedy, all the mission have launched from Launch Pad 39B. When will a shuttle be lauched again from Launch Pad 39A.
Tucker White from Powell,TN
Without Columbia, how can we service the Hubble Space Telescope without jeopardizing any assembly missions to the International Space Station.
Nhat Lam from Vietnam.
I'm a student. Are you nervous before the launch?
Nhat Lam from Vietnam
I've studied that in space humans can't talk to each other. But I've seen the astronauts can talk to Houston when they are in orbit and on the Moon. So, can humans talk in space? Thank you so much.
Nhat Lam from Vietnam
In orbit, Why are there fifteen sunrises and fifteen sunsets? Thanks.
Nitin from Hyderabad, INDI
On flight day 3 during Pitch Maneuver, how does the orbiter rotate 360 degree around its own center axis at the same position itself to the ISS? If it's done by firing jets at two extreme ends of the orbiter in opposite directions, how is the equal force of both jets precisely maintained?
Nitin from Hyderabad, INDI
What are Pico-satellites? I understand that three of them will be deployed during STS-116 mission. Where are they put in cargo bay and how and when they are deployed?
Nitin from Hyderabad, INDI
What is MAUI and RAMBO? How does it related to or affect payload?
Daryl from Jal, NM
With Sunita Williams joining Exp.14, she'll be the second astronaut to join an existing team. Is this being done so that there is always an experienced presence on board at a crew exchange or is there another reason?
Nhat Lam from Vietnam
Why must the astronauts wear the 'pumpkin suit' during launch and landing and why don't they wear it in orbit?
Nhat Lam from Vietnam
When astronauts exit for a spacewalk, does the oxygen leak out from inside the space shuttle when the hatch opens?
Tucker from White
Will there be a future shuttle mission to the ISS that'll have a shuttle ISS Crew Rotation like 2001 to 2002?
Arthur from Sedona
Why does the ISS need a new electrical system and what will the new truss do?
Tucker White from Powell,TN
I recall back in my college days from the first 4 shuttle missions that the external tanks were painted white. Why doesn't NASA still paint them white?
François from Namur (Belgium)
What happens if one of the two SRBs fails to ignite?
